On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the hair loss drug Propecia from a medicines use restriction (HRA) drug. This decision was taken after extensive review and assessment of the law andizarre sexual behaviour of men with male pattern baldness. Propecia is the only drug licensed to treat male pattern baldness, and has been medically approved for use in the UK since 1997. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing hair. Propecia is now only licensed for use by men under 18 years old and under a doctor's prescription.
Propecia is a prescription drug in the UK. It is not licensed in the US, and is not available in the EU. The drug was originally approved for use in men by the FDA in 1998, and has since been available in several other countries including the European Union, the US, Canada, and Australia. In 2018 there were more than 150,000 prescriptions for Propecia for use by men in the EU and in the US.
